Perhaps the most important reason to have a portrait made is that no matter how much your family changes, a portrait never forgets. It holds time still and always remembers, not just how you looked that day, but who you were and what life was like during that season.
There is no better example than this gorgeous portrait of these sisters.
When we presented this piece to Mom she was overcome with emotion as she realized just how much her children had changed in the short time since the sitting. The older daughter, now taller than her mother, was transitioning from child to teenager and going through the same struggles that we all did at that age as we re-discover who we are and get used to life with more independence and responsibility. The younger daughter, also changing, was working to find her voice as the younger sister while the world grew up around her.
In short, the quiet moment between sisters that we memorialized just a few months before had all but been put on hold, giving way to life, sibling rivalries, and simply growing up.
I reminded Mom, however, that this portrait remembers more than just a moment – it symbolizes this entire season and will become even more significant to their family as time passes. These girls will forever look at this portrait and remember what life was like that year.
For as long as they could remember, Mom had always worked. The year this portrait was made, however, God had other plans for their family:
That was the year that Mom picked them up from school every day without fail. That was the year that Mom was always there to help with homework; to take them to practice; to care for them every moment they were sick; and to steer them ahead as they stumbled through life. They saw her helping out at school and volunteering at church. They saw their Mom love their Dad more than ever before... That was the year their family rediscovered themselves.
You see a portrait is more than just a pretty picture of someone. A portrait is about someone, and a J.Ridout portrait tells a story that your family will never forget – that is Your Heart on the Wall.
